City of Havre de Grace Receives Prestigious Sustainable Maryland Certified Award at Maryland Municipal League Conference

College Park, MD (October 15, 2025) – The Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland announced that the City of Havre de Grace was one of 18 Maryland municipalities honored at the Sustainable Maryland Awards Ceremony at the Maryland Municipal League’s annual Fall Conference. The Town was certified at the Silver level.

“The Sustainable Maryland program has been instrumental in helping Havre de Grace acknowledge and track its extensive volunteer efforts and many key initiatives,” said Mayor William T. Martin. “This vital work has directly contributed to the capstone projects that establish our City as an outstanding place to live, work and recreate. By meeting the program’s rigorous standards, we ensure that we are not only enriching the quality of life for everyone today, but also acting as dedicated stewards of our environment for the future.”

According to Mike Hunninghake, Director of the Sustainable Maryland program, “Municipalities know that, now more than ever, they need to be prepared for the shocks associated with climate change. In the absence of federal leadership, local governments are proactively leading the way to a more sustainable, carbon-neutral, and equitable path to the future. The actions of this year’s Sustainable Maryland Certified communities collectively add up to a more positive and resilient future for their towns and residents.”
