Statement from Mayor William T. Martin on the Passing of former Mayor John P. Correri, Jr.

“It is hard to even begin to explain the loss our community has suffered with the passing of our beloved friend and former Mayor, John P. Correri, Jr. For me, like I am sure is the case for so many of you, this news feels like losing a big brother.

John was a servant leader who always gave you his full attention, with an extraordinary ability to listen to and understand the concerns of our city. When we served together on the City Council, John became a true mentor to me. He was always willing to sit down, talk, and really listen to his fellow council members, offering guidance grounded in decades of wisdom and love for our community. We have lost a great man whom I was proud to call my friend.

What I always admired about John was his integrity, a true Havre de Gracian whose family roots in our community date back to the 1890s. A graduate of The John Carroll School and the University of Baltimore, he dedicated himself as an elected official—serving as Councilman, Council President, and Mayor, as well as earning a spot in the Maryland Municipal League Hall of Fame. Most recently, John continued his commitment to his city by serving as Chairman of the Havre de Grace Ethics Commission.

His devotion went far beyond City Hall. For over 50 years, John served as a trustee for the Havre de Grace Ambulance Corps, a member of the Susquehanna Hose Company, and an active leader with St. Patrick’s Church and Citizens Care and Rehabilitation. In 2022, he was honored as a Harford Living Treasure.

John spent his life in service to community. On behalf of the City of Havre de Grace, I extend my deepest condolences to his wife, Linda, and the entire Correri family.

In honor of John’s legacy, I have ordered all City flags to be lowered to half-staff.”
