Hydrant Flushing: October-December, 2023

The Department of Public Works is conducting city-wide flushing of fire hydrants. Hydrant flushing is performed two times a year – once in the spring and once in the fall, ideally before winter ices the roads.

Flushing operations began on October 30 and weather dependent, this project is on schedule to finish before January 1, 2024. The work is generally performed between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Flushing of the city hydrants is a planned, organized, and sequential technique that is preventative maintenance for the entire water distribution system. Flushing the hydrants ensures adequate water flow is available to firefighters, residents, and businesses. It also improves water quality by clearing iron and other mineral deposits from the water mains and reduces the potential for contamination.

What does this mean for you?

During hydrant flushing operations, some customers may briefly notice reduced water pressure, flow, or discoloration. While the water supply remains safe to drink, should you notice any discoloration, please avoid washing clothing or consuming until the cold tap runs clear.

Thank you for your understanding and patience. Further questions can be answered by calling the Department of Public Works at 410-939-1800.
